OCTOBER: Filipino American History Month
Filipino American History Month
October is a time when Filipina/o/x Americans reflect on their overlooked contributions in the United States. Since Filipino Americans have been excluded for a long time, Fred Cordova of the Filipino American National Historical Society refers to them as "forgotten Asian Americans." As a result, the Filipinx experience is often characterized by their “in-between” status among many communities. As a historical context, the Philippines is involved in a dark and contentious colonial relationship.
Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish American war, it was returned to the United States in 1898 after over 300 years of Spanish rule. Many Americans were unaware that the Philippines became an epicenter of colonialism, imperialism, and military-industrial complexes. Although the Philippines have been independent for almost half a century, the United States continues to exert influence over its school systems and legal system.
