Fair Housing Month is an important time for REALTORS® across the country to reflect on the progress made since the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and to reaffirm our commitment to providing equal opportunities in housing for all. This year, we celebrated the strides made toward creating more inclusive communities while also focusing on the work still needed to ensure that everyone has access to homeownership and housing opportunities regardless of background, race, or income.
A Look Back: The Passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968
The Fair Housing Act, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, was a landmark piece of legislation that prohibited discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Over the past 50+ years, the Act has been a cornerstone in the ongoing fight for equality in housing, ensuring that all individuals have the right to live in communities of their choice.
As we observed this momentous occasion, we took time to recognize the continued work required to ensure that these protections remain in place and that fair housing practices evolve with the times.
