Fair Housing Month is an important time for REALTORS® across the country to reflect on the progress made since the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and to reaffirm our commitment to providing equal opportunities in housing for all. This year, we celebrated the strides made toward creating more inclusive communities while also focusing on the work still needed to ensure that everyone has access to homeownership and housing opportunities regardless of background, race, or income.
A Look Back: The Passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968
The Fair Housing Act, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, was a landmark piece of legislation that prohibited discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Over the past 50+ years, the Act has been a cornerstone in the ongoing fight for equality in housing, ensuring that all individuals have the right to live in communities of their choice.
As we observed this momentous occasion, we took time to recognize the continued work required to ensure that these protections remain in place and that fair housing practices evolve with the times.
Celebrating Leadership in Fair Housing
A key highlight of this year’s Fair Housing Month celebration was the recognition of Bill Flagg as the recipient of the 2025 Fair Housing Champion Award. Bill’s dedication and tireless work in advancing fair housing initiatives in his community have made a lasting impact. His efforts to provide affordable housing options and advocate for inclusive policies stand as an inspiring example of leadership in the real estate industry. Congratulations again, Bill, for your outstanding contributions to ensuring fair housing for all!
A Conversation with Louise Story and Ebony Reed
This year, we were fortunate to hear from renowned journalists Louise Story and Ebony Reed. They shared insights from their award-winning book, Fifteen Cents on the Dollar, which explores the history of housing discrimination and its lasting impact on communities of color. Their work sheds light on how racial inequalities in housing continue to affect generations of families and highlights the need for continued policy changes.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Fair Housing and Technology
The fair housing conversation isn’t just about looking back—it's also about pushing forward. An expert panel discussed the role technology plays in advancing fair housing, focusing on how data and digital tools can help eliminate biases in the housing market. By utilizing these resources, REALTORS® and organizations can work toward dismantling the systemic barriers that prevent equal access to housing.
Moving Toward a More Inclusive Future
As we reflect on the progress made, we also recognize the work that remains. The future of fair housing depends on our continued commitment to breaking down the barriers that have historically prevented many people from owning homes or living in the communities of their choice. It also relies on advocating for policy changes and embracing new technology that can promote fairness and transparency in the housing market.
Fair Housing Month serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to live where they choose, and it’s a commitment that REALTORS® across the country continue to champion. We remain dedicated to fostering diverse, inclusive, and equitable communities for all individuals, regardless of their race, background, or socioeconomic status.
By continuing to support initiatives like the Fair Housing Champion Award and staying at the forefront of the fair housing movement, we can help ensure a more inclusive future for generations to come.
